Mark asks…

How do you feel about people feeding their dogs or cat a vegetarian diet?

There are some vegetarians out there that feel their pets should be vegetarians too. Do you feel its healthy for a dog and cat?

image

Prodoc answers:

Cats are “obligate carnivores” which means they must have meat to survive and thrive. Dogs have long been re-classified as “omnivores.” Dogs don’t require meat as part of their diets. There are some very good vegetarian diets made for dogs.

image

Thomas asks…

Do you think a dog off can thrive of veggie diet ?

What are your opinions on a vegetarian diet for dogs ? do you think they can thrive ,or not , and do you have any first hand experience of this ?

Im not asking weather they are carnivores or omnivores (dogs where obviously designed to eat meat) , but weather you think they can thrive on a veggie diet alone ?

I have 3 dogs . One will not eat meat , strange but it has no interest in it She has been veggie for 7 years . She has a healthy diet i make sure she is getting a balanced diet with all the nutrients she needs. But she has never ever eaten meat . This is one of the healthiest dogs i have owned , she has never been ill not once .When walking her i get compliments on her coat , and some even think she is still a puppy (dispite weighing 60bl or there abouts) !! She is an Am Staff .

So i read often , only a moment ago infact , Dogs cannot thrive from a veggie diet . What are your basis for saying this ? Do you have any experience with veggie dogs ? Or are you just assuming a dog cannot live a long healthy diet when it is eating a non – meat diet ?

image

Prodoc answers:

I know that a dog can thrive on a vegetarian diet as my dog was fed strictly vegetarian for over five years … During that time she would exercise strenuously for at least two hours a day, she excelled in flyball, agility and obedience … She was trained to be an “extra” dog on movie sets … She was healthy, active, and very athletic … I tried her on a vegetarian diet due to animal protein allergies that were tested and confirmed by a doggie allergist (she also received immunotherapy for almost a year with ZERO effect) … And my dog too enjoyed very good health her entire life … The reality is protein is protein and a dog is an omnivore and therefore can thrive on a vegetarian diet … Ten years ago when i started my dog on a veggie diet, there were exactly two options for vegetarian kibble for dogs, now there are so many i can’t even count including mainstream companies such as natural balance whose vegetarian kibble has won an award … So if it was such a poor diet i doubt so many companies now would be making vegetarian formulas …

image

Betty asks…

did you know you can feed a dog a vegetarian or vegan diet and it be perfectly healthy?

im vegetarian ( going vegan) and they make a dog formula called (vegetarian formula) i guess because it does not have the slaughter house waste grounded up into the dog food ( unhealthy much?)

BUT on the other hand cat owners have to feed their cats meat. their for cat owners are supporting the slaughter houses that kill Innocent animals which is against us vegetarians and vegans beliefs and will more then likely tip us off. i Guess their is another pro about dogs ( other then they will die for you) and we all know ( or should know) us vegetarians and vegans are better then you meat eaters ( we live longer and are healthier on a proper vegan diet, its been proven) gorrilas are related to us, they have hands like us and are HERBIVORES who need fruits just like we do. were not meat eaters. a cat is a meat eater.
so theirs another pro for us dog owners. we dont have to support the meat indrustry by buying meat for our animals. us vegans and vegetarians just buy the vegetariand dog food. no animals harmed! not saying dogs are better as thats what us vegetarians are about…..seeing all animals as beatiful and worthy to live as much as us.

actually if u did your research you’d know dogs can have a veggie diet. and goriilas hands are like ours, made for picking fruits and peeling bannanas. their teeth are also like ours. made for grinding veggies ( chewing in a back and forth way) where as meat eaters ( the cat) chews up and down.
no taylor. we were put here on earth to be the animals caretakers. why bring religion in on this aurgument anyway? we dont eat ANY meat INCLUDING fish. we do NOT eat fish. they are animals to. its quit sick to eat dead flesh as well. we dont eat brainds, we dont eat guts.
if u eat meat u should have to catch yourself and watch it die…………

Prodoc answers:

Yes i did know that … In fact i had my dog on a vegetarian diet for a good portion of her adult life and she thrived … Dogs are omnivores and protein is protein … Don’t try to convince anyone here though …

Question about Vegetarian Dog Kibble?

First of all, I am in no way endorsing this diet nor am I planning on feeding my dog this, it’s purely out of interest.

Second, I am aware that I already asked this, but I did not receive the answers I was looking for, so I’m asking again.

Now, it’s pretty well established that dogs are essentially carnivorous.
Which basically comes to the understanding that dogs do not posess proper digestive enzymes to break down whole plant matter. (Kinda like humans, but we have the physiological properties which require undigested plant matter and w/e)

Anyways, when processed into kibble, would that not break the bonds within the plant matter and therefore make it useable nutrients?
Like I understand why they couldn’t just eat like carrots each day, but when it’s broken down….does anyone know if that makes it useable energy?

And if so, would a dog be able to do just as well on that as a high quality meat based kibble?

(This is also assuming that the nutritional info is similar to a high quality meat based kibble)
With kibble though, does the processing not matter?
I mean, I wouldn’t imagine that it puts much stress on the internal organs because it’s relatively unrecognizable anyways by the time it hits the shelves you know?

Like obviously I understand the stress whole vegetables would put on the digestive tract.

image

Prodoc answers:

Anyways, when processed into kibble, would that not break the bonds within the plant matter and therefore make it useable nutrients? -> Pretty much. Its the same reason people who do the BARF version of raw feeding have to process/blend the fruits and veggies they feed

Its usable but how much compared to a meat based kibble I don’t know. You know I am wondering if any comparison studies have been done, obviously on dogs who aren’t allergic to meat based protein.

Give me a sec reading articles an apparently HSUS has put out their own vegan pet food

ETA: First off ANYONE who would feed the overpriced imported crap in a bag HSUS is hawking is a fool. Compared to other vegan/vegetarian kibbles Humane Choice is lacking in bout Taurine and L-carnitine both of which are essentianl to dogs. While dogs can produce their own taurine low levels can lead to DCM. Will try and find the 2003 studied referenced in this article http://www.whole-dog-journal.com/issues/13_4/features/Vegetarian-Dog-Food_16213-1.html stating “dogs fed diets containing rice, rice bran, or barley had lower levels of taurine in their blood.”

SO if the ingredients are right and the proper supplements have been added I suppose a proper vegan diet under the right circumstances would be a good alternative.

Raw meat diet for dogs- my Yorkie…?

This is question for Raw-feeders. I work for a premium pet food company. I did my research and found that raw meat alone is the best diet for a dog, most natural.
So my question is: I started my Yorkshire Terrier on it today, she is 2 years old and about 6 pounds. It is confusing with a small dog, what do I do differently? I gave her a raw Perdue chicken wing, and she did not seem that into it at first, dragged it around-ew! she ate the smaller tip of the wing, but has not eaten the bigger part, and I’m worried about her getting enough food and being able to chew it. Also, doesn’t it gross anyone out that your dog will be licking you with their raw-meat mouth, and the hair around their mouth? I am a vegetarian myself, so I am unfamiliar with raw meat, it grosses me out! I also got some beef chunks, it says good for stew, will she choke, because it is in chunks smaller than 2 inches, like beef stew. Is that too tough?

Any advice for me just starting off raw w/small dog?
It’s gone, and she wants more. Only took her 20 minutes first time.
Actually, most of you need to be educated, there are many Doctors (vets) who reccommend raw. Most Vets actually don’t know much about nutrition and they are SPONSORED by pet food companies like Science Diet, which is crap anyways as far as dog food goes. It is ONLY raw meat, and dogs do not choke on bones, only cooked bones. If you want to have some great knowledge, Dr. Wysong is great- www.wysong.net Cooked food is not good for dogs. I know a lot about canine nutrition, and this is the best way if you really care about your dog’s life! Research www.wysong.net or search “raw food diet for dogs, etc.” on any search engine. Open your mind.

image

Prodoc answers:

I breed GSDs. I only feed raw. It will take her a bit to figure out what you have given her but once she does she will not want kibble again. Chicken wings are good so are legs, the chunks should be fine but if your worried blend them down into mush. Also very important don’t forget to give her organ meat 2x per week (heart is muscle, so you want to be giving her liver, kidney that kind of thing.) I don’t let my dogs lick my face period so it doesn’t bother me.
When you give her her organ meat blend up some veggies as well not alot just a small bit.
Because my dogs are much bigger than yours they get bigger pieces, but along with chicken they also get rabbit, pork, deer, moose, beef, duck, and game birds. Don’t give smoked meat it has too much salt.

Sandra asks…

Switching to an all vegetarian diet. Where can I find recipes and tips on this transition? On a budget!?

image

Prodoc answers:

I hope you like beans. Seriously though dried legumes and whole grains off many different varieties comprise a complete protein when eaten together/in the same day. For example some quinoa porridge for breakfast with fruit. A lentil, brown rice and veggies stir fry or pilaf for lunch, more fruit/veggies or maybe hummus with whole-grain pita dippers for snack. Mexican pintos and spanish (brown) rice for supper. I don’t have a ton of specific recipes but for general budget-friendly and healthful shopping buy whole, unproccessed foods where ever possible. Your big sacks of dried beans and whole grains are generally pretty cheap on a per-serving basis, as are whole fresh veggies/fruits, not the precut yucky ones, and don’t be afraid of frozen veg and fruit, in winter they usually have more nutrition than the similar “fresh” stuff being transported from another hemisphere.
Also don’t be too shy in your use of oils, and try to avoid stuff like canola which is actually chemically processed in like 16 different steps. You want real olive oil, flax seed oil, good omega fats to help your body absorb vitamins and minerals as well as nourishing the nervous system. In fact certain vitamins and some minerals are not well-absorbed by the intestines if there isn’t any fat ingested at the same time as them. Hope this helps some!

I haven’t been a vegetarian long, so I need to know of healthy recipes. I’m also a person on a diet. I hate the very thought of eating animals. It’s lingered on me for many years, but now the thought of it…makes me cry. But that’s not the point. I’m looking for recipes! Does anybody know of healthy ones?

Vegan Diets vs. Conventional Diets?

I have read a whole lot about Vegan Diets . If we all “could” go to Vegan Food , we would save a lot of water and help save rivers , coastlines etc. . Vegan Food has less and perhaps no Injections that Cows and chickens or any animal .. must have . Many many injections are needed to keep the animal to stay alive and grow fast . Question : Would our soil and rivers and coastlines be better off with a Vegan Food Industry ?

image

Prodoc answers:

Yes, because the conventional American diet is completely unsustainable to the environment- it would take the energy of four Earths to provide for every individual if they ate like most Americans do. A vegan diet uses CONSIDERABLY less water (thousands and thousands gallons less per day) and is overall the ideal diet, if you’re looking for the human race as well as the planet to survive.

George asks…

do vegan diets work quickly?

i would also like some links for a vegan diet guide or something?

image

Prodoc answers:

Hi Jade – I’ve been vegan since 1994 and I coach people how to use the vegan diet to lose weight. To answer your question, no it doesn’t usually work quickly. But the weight you lose is usually gone for good, as long as you continue to eat the right foods, drink lots of water, and exercise.

You’re looking for a vegan diet guide or something like that? My entire site is packed with free information about vegan cooking and the vegan diet. It might be just what you’re looking for.

VEGAN Diets and bowlemovements! PLEASE READ!?

I have been VEGAN for almost three months now and I have a bowel movement at least 6-8 times a day and that is no exaggeration. My diet consists of mostly vegetables, whole grain rice, beans, mock meat and some fruits. My favorite vegetable dish is sautéed spinach and I usually eat it by it self or sometimes with mock meat. I ate a bowl of sautéed spinach & 8 hrs later I had a bowelmovement & I looked in the toilet & to my amazement I saw the spinach. It was like I didn’t even eat it. Looked the same and it had no odor. The spinach that I ate came out of me looking the same way it did when I ate it. If I would have took it out of the toilet and put back into a bowel no one would have known I just crapped it out. I mean talk about being cleaned out! Is this normal for VEGANS to have food go threw them in only 6-8 hours and has any other VEGANS or Vegetarians experienced this? And if so, is it normal to have a bowel movements look exactly like it did when you ate it? Color and all?

Are there any good vegetarian diets tht help with losing weight?

Just wanna lose some pounds Oh! And feel free to leave any good recipes to I’m tiered of eating fake meat patties from morning star! Haha

image

Prodoc answers:

Yes,I agree with the person above me. Go vegan! But then again it all boils down to one thing. How much you eat. Even a vegan person can be overweight. You need to reduce your intake at each of the three meals. Please stop eating mock meat as it contains sodium and cannot form part of a staple diet. It is also costlier than consuming vegetables directly.
You need to make sure you eat pulses at least three times a week and fruits and vegetables everyday.
Have a fruit for breakfast and a vegetable/pulses for lunch and dinner.
Make sure you include all vegetables, pulses, lentils and beans(kidney beans, chickpeas, black eyed peas, green peas)

Prodoc answers:

It is easy to adapt the South Beach Diet for vegetarians. Instead of lean meats there are other sources of protein such as beans, legumes and soy products. Fruit and whole grain foods are allowed in moderation in the second and third phases of the diet. Low fat dairy products and eggs are allowed with more permissive vegetarian versions

Why are vegetarian diets bad for you?

I am trying to come up with reasons why vegetarian diets are not so healthy. All I have so far is that they tend to lack important vitamins and nutrients (iron, omega-3′s..so on). I seriously can’t think of anything else…any ideas?
I’m a vegetarian so I don’t think they’re bad, I just have to write a paper that is about the opposing side. :)

image

Prodoc answers:

Hey, I’m afraid this won’t be much help but I wouldn’t actually say they’re bad for you at all!

They do not lack anything. We can get all the nutrition we need without animal products.

They’re also lower in saturated fat.

Sorry!

George asks…

Can someone please explain the various Vegetarian diets to me?

If I eat chicken, tuna or eggs, am I still a vegetarian? How about egg beaters?

image

Prodoc answers:

Vegan: absolutely no meat, fish or animal by-products
This is the strictest, and hardest to follow. Many specialized foods, because products like bread contain animal by-products (milk, eggs, etc.)

Ovovegetarian: no meat, poultry or fish – but they do eat eggs

Lactovegetarian: no meat, poultry or fish – but they do eat dairy

Ovo-Lactovegetarian: no meat, poultry or fish – but they do eat eggs and dairy

Pescavegetarian: no meat or poultry – but they do eat fish

Pollovegetarian: no meat or fish – but they do eat poultry

So in answer to your question, yes – you are still a vegetarian – an Pollo-Pesca-Ovo Vegetarian!

Many people who call themselves vegetarians have only eliminated red meat from their diets. It sounds to me like you are one of these people.

Vegan (no eggs, dairy, or meat)

Vegetarian diets have a variety of benefits.

-Helps to reduce animal suffering
-Better for the environment; plant-based diets are more efficient
-Protects your health. Meat consumption is linked to health problems like heart disease, diabetes, obesity, colon cancer, etc.
-Some people find it easier to lose weight
-Have more energy
-Live your values at every meal

Ruth asks…

What are the benefits of becoming a Vegetarian? Do really need meal in your diet?

image

Prodoc answers:

It is not neccessary to eat meat. You can get everything you need from a healthy vegetarian or vegan diet. You just have to be careful to eat enough protein and enough of each nutrient, just as you do with any diet in order to be healthy.

By not eating meat (and doing it right) you are at less risk of obesity, certain cancers, type 2 diabetes, food poisoning……
Lots of other things I can’t remember. I just do it cos this is what feels right.

What are the benefits of adding liquid amino acids to a (lacto-ovo) vegetarian diet?

I’ve seen the Bragg’s products and heard people mention “liquid” amino acids, but I don’t really understand them or how they are used. I know there are 9 essential AAs but is this liquid form simply a supplement? I don’t know how much, how often to use them. Any recipe suggestions? Thanks!
I’m really hoping for info specifically about using supplemental AAs. I understand the overall importance of AAs as the building blocks of protein, how to use complete proteins to ensure all 9 essential AAs are consumed, etc. If anyone has feedback or references on the need to supplement, that would be ideal.
TIA!

A wonderful book for the lacto-ovo Vegetarian, Is ” Diet For a Small Planet”, the book explains how to get complete essential amino acids in every dish. A combination of grains, legumes, etc.
It is interesting that certain cultures have been doing it for centuries. The Mexican eating, rice, beans, and corn. The follow-up book “Recipes for a Small Planet” has many recipes, to inspire the appetite.

If i changed my diet drastically and became a vegan how much weight would i lose?

im 5’10 and weight 150 pounds. i don’t need you to tell me this isn’t healthy and i don’t need weight loss supplements either… i need to lose weight by June 10th.. how much could i lose by them by doing this?
im not very physically active.

image

Prodoc answers:

Losing weight is all about calories in versus calories out. Doesn’t matter if you eat only meat, only dairy, only plants, or any combination of the three.

I lost weight by changing my eating habits, not what I ate. I’d eat huge breakfasts (around 700 calories), big lunches (~500), small dinners (~300), and a large snack (~200) in the evening. I was told to eat four to six meals a day with breakfast being the largest and dinner the smallest, and that is the advice I pass along to you. Also, avoid sodas and junk foods.

Good results with weight loss being vegan any advice?

I am an 18 girl 5″5″ and I weigh 123 since being a raw vegan I have lost 10 pounds in one months. Will diet supplements aid in the process? I eat a total of about 400 cal a day but am never hungry.. Black coffee apple banana apple sauce saurkrat salad with mustard and diet soda. I am not excerising so I know when I do I will lose even more. My goal weight is 108

image

Prodoc answers:

Congratulations on your choice of being vegan. I lost 80 pounds just by eating a whole plant based diet and avoiding processed food additives such as excess salt, oil, refined carbohydrates, sugar, and food additives. MSG and aspartame (diet soda) will prevent you from losing weight. Stop drinking diet soda and stop drinking any form of commercial fruit juices and drinks. If you want something sweet, just eat some whole fruit. Stick with water as your primary drink of choice.

Over the long term, any human will break a 400 calorie per day diet and make up for lost calories. (Gina Kolata) I suggest that you eat the following foods:

- Leafy Greens
- Whole Grains (not processed, not gluten)
- Legumes (peas, flax seed ground, beans)
- Colorful vegetables
- Fruits
- B12, D3, and Omega-3(flax seed)

This contains a lot of plant protein, calcium, and other nutrients. The fiber in this diet prevents hunger and allows the calories to be absorbed over a period of time.

Help me with my diet…no weight loss diets…please This is serious and really URGENTTTT!!!?

Help me with my diet…no weight loss diets…please This is serious and really URGENTTTT!!!?
Right now I am recovering bulimia and MAJOR binge eating. I have gained about 7-8 lbs in one week because of my constant binging and not being able to stop. I had anorexia and weighed about 80 lbs around January, but right now I am 90 (but the highest I have been recently was 97, but my weights been yo-yoing lately). I am 5’1 and turning 15 this summer.

Last summer I was 110 pounds and ate whatever the hell I felt like, but then I lost the 30 lbs(from anorexia) then my mom took me to the doctor and she made me gain weight.

From all my binging, my stomach has expanded soo mych that I can eat literally 3 pieces of pizza, a plate of pasta, a protein bar, and ice cream and not be full at all!! I used to get full from drinking some OJ and eating a cup of soup. I want that again, but I can’t stop eating.

Please don’t tell me to still gain weight since I’m still underweight because if I keep binging at this rate I will be overweight reallyy reallly soon! I am constantly bloated. I hate it. I am also a vegetarian and would like to become a vegan sometime.

Can someone please help….

Daniel asks…

Weight loss diets for vegans?

like a diet plan for fast and easy weight loss and by easy i mean easy to follow like eco-atkins

image

Prodoc answers:

As you plan a vegan diet for weight loss, keep in mind that you do need to eat minimum amounts of certain foods for good health. Plan your diet to include at least 6 servings of whole grains, 8 servings of fruits and vegetables, and 4 servings of some combination of legumes, nuts, or soy products. (Remember that a serving of nuts is just 2 tablespoons and a serving of legumes or soy is just _ cup–or 1 cup of soymilk). Then make sure you are getting 1000 milligrams of calcium every day (see the November 20, 2000 article for information on how to do this). If you don’t eat foods that provide this much calcium, use supplements. Make sure you are including a source of vitamin B12 in your diet as well. And make sure you get adequate sun exposure or use foods fortified with vitamin D. This is sort of the bare minimum of what you need. But, based on your body size and your own needs, it may not be enough food even for someone who wants to lose weight. So, add in other foods–like more grains, small amounts of oil for sautéing veggies, some treats, etc–until you get to an intake that is satisfying to you but still allows some slow weight loss. There is a little bit of trial and error involved here. It’s really all about what works for you. Don’t be so stingy with food that you are feeling hungry and losing weight rapidly. This can lead to unhealthy attitudes about food or can be very difficult to maintain over the long term if you are always feeling hungry or unsatisfied. If you can’t create an eating plan for yourself that allows you to lose weight, then it’s a good idea to meet with a dietitian to work out a good approach.
